Weight loss excuses
Weight loss excuses, they never seize to surprise us. We speak to many people whom want to loose weight in our line of work. A lot of people have always wanted to loose the weight, but also give a lot of excuses. Nothing short off, the dog ate my weight loss program, to aliens came down and prevent me from doing this.
The most common weight loss excuses we hear in terms of getting started are:
1. “I have a slow metabolism”, few people actually have a slow metabolism, even less whom may this claim ever had this measured. Indeed it takes a long time to digest certain foods and quantities of food. That doesn’t mean that metabolism is slowER. Perhaps not enough things are done to speed metabolism up.
2. “It is genetic”, again this often relates to poor habits, then it does to physical reasons.
3. “Diets, pills, and other quick and easy methods are an option. I want to do someting that works fast.” There is no quick solution that is also healthy and lasting. It can however be made easy, if people start getting in control of their brain.
4. “I don’t have time”, obesity and being overweight shortens your life expectancy, you gain time by maintaining a healthy weight. How much time does eating the surplus food take? And what is taking priority over your health, happiness and life? How much faster would you move, if you were less sluggish, and in a good shape?
5. “No pain, no gain”, no wonder people don’t get started. We are programmed to move away from pain. We know that weight loss doesn’t have to hurt.
6. “I can’t do it. I have already tried everything.” Everything?
7. “I must finish my plate.” According to whom? What would happen if you didn’t? You’d be surprised when asked enough according to whom they need to finish their plate how many clients answer “my mom.”
8. “I need to finish X, before I start a program. I am waiting for X.” and “I know I should, but I am waiting for the right time.”
There are many more weight loss excuses, but here are the ones that I hear the most often. Sometimes they can actually quite humorous. After all these years it still amazes me, that people go great lengths to stay miserable, and not change. As Richard Bandler said (paraphrasing:) ” There is only one thing that a human will hold on to more then survival, it is familiarity.” This is true, wars have been fought over it.
In a way poor living and eating habits, are like drinking a little bit of poison every day. It is surprising to me that people whom I know to be excellent proud mothers, teach their children poor living strategies by example.
It surprises me that people still go for dieting. For some reason it has gotten hard wired in to our brains, that to loose weight we need to follow diet, instead of making life style changes. Scientifically, 90% of all diets fail. I wouldn’t go see a doctor whom is only effective 10% of the time, would you? It surprises me that after all this time few people have caught on that the magic behind weight loss are the programs we run in our head, and turning habit in to change. It is just a matter of teaching the brain.
